Surgery on both feet at once

Post a new topicby Kim12 on Sat Jun 12, 2010 1:40 pm

I'm scheduled to have surgery for Morton's Neuroma on June 30 - both feet at the same time. I'm a residential real estate appraiser and am on my feet a considerable amount of time daily as well as an avid power walker (5+ miles/day). I've had this condition for about 7 years now with pain on and off depending on what shoes I wear and how long I spend on my feet. The reason for seeking surgery is recurring night-time pain when I'm off my feet. Anything that disturbs my sleep has to go! I'm 52 years old and in good physical shape. I'm interested in opinions from people who have had both feet done at the same time. Thanks in advance.

I had both feet done together, at your age. about four years ago. The left foot was appreciably worse than the right and was significantly affecting my ordinary life. Pain in the right was on and off, and not a major issue. Both feet have been problematic since, with scar tissue and the nerve regrowing into the wrong place on the left foot (for which I had more surgery). The right foot is now more uncomfotable than before the surgery. If I'd had just the left done to start with, I'd have known scar tissue would be an issue and definitely not have had the right one done. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! I never thought I would be in the minority for whom the surgery can make things worse and went ahead on the basis i would get all the pain and inconvenience over in one go. now find it extremely difficult to find any shoes that are comfortable, whereas before it wasn't so hard.

On the positive side I know someone who had them both done together, made a good recovery and has never looked back.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for your response. The majority of the stories I've read over the past week have been similar to yours...they wouldn't do it again; most believe they're in a worse position post-surgery than before.

I think it's worth remembering that most people who reply to these forums after the surgery are the ones who've had a rough time, the rest (the majoirity I think) just go away and forget about it with a new lease of life. But that said, I would think long and hard about having just one done and see how that goes, especially if you can get along pretty much ok with the right shoes etc.

All the best!

Kim -- I came across your post. I need to have the surgery in both feet and was wondering what you decided to do -- both feet at once or one at a time? How are you doing post surgery? Thanks for your reply -- I've got to schedule my surgery today!!

I am 55 years old and had surgery on both feet on 6.3.2010. Maybe I just got a bad doctor, but if I had it to do over again I would not. I was led to believe that recovery time would be minimal and 3 months post op my feet feel worse, not better and I am not a wimp. I am actually pretty tough having had 4 babies, gall bladder surgery, a hystorectomy, kidney stones.....you get the picture. I am not overweight, so that's not a factor as to weight on the feet and I am quite active.....walking, yard work, playing ball and outside activities with grandchildren. I've still done all these things once I got past the initial healing process, but they are still uncomfortable and I am going to seek help from another doctor soon. If you can stand the discomfort of the neuromas or can keep the pain under control otherwise, I would not recommend the surgery or at least I would get a second opinion. I hope this helps.
