To be operated upon or not to be?I am scheduled for right and left neuroma surgery this Friday, and I'm getting cold feet!
I experience excruciating pain during the school year; I'm a teacher who's on my feet all day. Neither orthotics nor cortisone shots helped. But during summer, I go barefoot; pain is gone. So I'm having surgery, even though the pain is gone now. I am told the pain will return once I start wearing shoes (even my wide, flat ones)and get back to teaching. My question is, do neuromas shrink when I'm off my feet and go barefoot, or are they there and I just can't feel them? If so, should I have surgery now, since I won't have time in September? Thank you for your time.
Re: To be operated upon or not to be?See runrunr query of 7/29/02...may have option of injections to "deactivate" nerve cluster. runr

Re: Re: To be operated upon or not to be?Neuromas do not shrink on their own. You do not feel them now because your toes are not being squeezed together like they are when they are in shoes. Therefore, you probably will need surgery if no conservative treatment has helped. However, the reply that you also received from runrunr is about alcohol sclerosing injections. Sclerosing injections into the area of the nerve can actually shrink the nerve in about sixty percent of the patints it is tried on. Therefore, if you are unsure, you may want to ask about this treatment. Have a nice day and please write back if you have any further questions.
